ABOUT TSAVO EAST NATIONAL PARK
Tsavo East is one of Kenya’s oldest and largest national parks — a vast semi-arid wilderness
at the eastern edge of the inland plateau, north of the Mombasa-Nairobi Road.
The park is famous for its legendary red elephants — massive herds whose skin is stained rust-red by the rich volcanic soil. Home to nearly 700 lions, Tsavo East is one of the world’s greatest wildlife strongholds.
The Yatta Plateau — a 290km long flat-topped lava ridge — runs along the western boundary, making it one of the world’s longest lava flows. The beautiful man-made Aruba Dam built in 1952 across the Voi River attracts thousands of animals and water birds daily. Mudanda Rock — a 1.5km long whale-backed outcrop — towers above a natural dam where hundreds of elephants come to drink and bathe in the dry season.
